The world is chaotic, and –each of us is battling something, foremost among them being health and relationships.

Much of this can be resolved with compassion and empathy. Let us first understand what these mean. As explained in an article published by Mindful - healthy mind, healthy life , ’Compassion is simply a kind, friendly presence in the face of what’s difficult. Its power is connecting us with what’s difficult—it offers us an approach that differs from the turning away that we usually do. We begin with empathy—that feeling of connection. When we can acknowledge the commonality of the human condition, something beautiful happens: we diminish the subtle cruelty of indifference.’
Here are some ways to understand and modify human behaviour with warmth and compassion:
1. Active Listening - Offer undivided attention to someone who is talking. Avoid interrupting them and let them complete what they’re saying. If you have questions, ask for clarity politely. It’s highly essential to acknowledge the speaker’s emotions and validate their feelings.
2. Self-Compassion - We often don’t realise how harsh we can be on ourselves, with habits of self-blame, or begrudging our own actions or feelings. This deeply impacts our emotional, mental and eventually our physical health as well. Compassion and empathy truly begins with us, when we become gentle towards ourselves first. Another form of self-care involves forgiving ourselves.

3. Compassion For Others - Being compassionate towards others is not rocket science. Step into the others person’s shoes and try to analyse the situation they are in and their perspective, even if you don’t agree with them. A non-judgemental mind, openness and curiosity are essential. Ask open-ended questions that give deeper responses. Get into the habit of practicing kindness by helping someone, or even just paying attention to another person’s suffering. Amidst all of this it's necessary to keep a tab on biases that might influence your perception of others.

4. Strengthen Relationships - Try keeping communications straightforward, clear, honest and open. This will lead to lesser miscommunication or misunderstanding. Secondly, learning to forgive others is essential to leading a happier life. Grudges weigh you down. Be open to forgiving people for your own well-being. Forgiveness might be tough, or at times next to impossible. Still, regular practice of can help you overcome this. Lastly, encouragement and support are key roles in deepening any bond.

Once you have nailed the above, you’ll find yourself in a better, calmer and happier space.
