Derived from the word ‘anomaly’, Anomalia was established in 2022 with a commitment to creating design solutions that challenge convention and generate meaningful impact. Operating at the intersection of design, technology and material innovation, the firm is driven by a spirit of curiosity and experimentation. Co-founder Bhakti V Loonawat holds a quiet but unwavering belief that sustainability should be a starting point, woven into every material choice and every act of making.
It began with co-founder Suyash Sawant growing mushroom mycelium in cupcake moulds, a process that evolved through years of testing and refinement into load-bearing building blocks made from mycelium and agricultural waste. Today, these pioneering materials have been exhibited in Mumbai, the Venice Architecture Biennale and the 5th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2025, demonstrating the potential of regenerative materials in shaping the built environment.
Yet the work continues. Anomalia is currently exploring the possibilities with seaweed and developing new material systems using discarded milk carton scraps, transforming waste into opportunity. In this HerCirlce Bizruptor feature, Bhakti V Loonawat reveals that the firm nurtures a collective approach to innovation, proving that the future of design is not only about what we build, but also about the materials, relationships and values that shape it.
In this video, she shares her vision for the company and her belief that sustainability should never be treated as a luxury available only to a select few. Instead, she argues that it must be woven into the very fabric of design, becoming an inherent responsibility rather than an afterthought or add-on.
