Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s CBC News conducted an investigation that resulted in the finding of potentially toxic chemicals in certain fast fashion products. As per the investigation which tested 38 clothes and accessory samples of children and adults along with maternity wear, one in five items had elevated levels of chemicals like lead, phthalates and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). The items in concern include products from Shein, Zaful and Ali Express. The Chinese-based shopping platforms have previously faced backlash from the global community owing to the excess production they incur.
Scientists that were a part of the investigation found that a jacket for children by Shein contained almost 20 times the amount of lead whereas a red purse contained five times the amount of lead that is permitted and regarded safe for usage in the country.
A clear tote from Zaful contained high levels of phthalates, that are considered harmful beyond a certain amount. A raincoat purchased from AliExpress contained high levels of PFAS as well.
While exposure to lead, a naturally occurring toxic metal, can cause adverse health impacts on the development of the brain and nervous system in children, it can also cause long-term kidney damage and increased blood pressure in adults, as per the World Health Organisation. As reported previously by CNN, PFAS exposure can lead to liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression as well as cancer. Phthalates, on the other hand can cause various neurological, psychological disorders and also obesity, diabetes among other heath concerns.
While Zaful is not yet available to Indian consumers, both Shein and AliExpress were banned by the Indian Government in June last year. However, earlier this year, Shein was relaunched on Amazon. While Shein is largely liked by consumers who prefer diverse sizes and affordable prices, the brand has often garnered concern from the fashion community across the globe owing to the high environmental impact of its business.
