Barbie just became much more real and relatable! Mattel unveiled its first Barbie doll with Type 1 diabetes, replete with an insulin pump, continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and even a snack handbag. Now before attending the Dreamhouse pool party, Barbie can check her blood sugar levels. The 2025 Barbie Fashionistas collection includes the new doll, which was developed in collaboration with Breakthrough T1D, the premier Type 1 diabetes advocacy and research organisation in the world. Breakthrough T1D is committed to helping people with Type 1 diabetes and their families, promoting affordable access to care, and providing funds for research.

From the Barbie-pink, heart-shaped medical tape that holds her CGM in place to the insulin pump that is linked to her waist, the partnership ensured that the doll's design accurately captures the realities of people with type 1 diabetes.

Barbie's ensemble, which includes a blue polka-dotted top and skirt with a circle motif—an international emblem for diabetes—is an homage to the awareness of diabetes worldwide. She even includes a pastel blue purse that's the perfect size for diabetic supplies or emergency munchies, as well as a toy phone that shows a CGM app and ‘real-time’ blood sugar data. Her phone's blood sugar readings were selected with care to capture the highs and lows of living with Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease that occurs when the body's immune system unintentionally targets the pancreatic cells that produce insulin. Individuals with T1D need to constantly check their blood sugar levels and use insulin therapy. According to the most recent global data, around 1.85 million people under the age of 20 will have Type 1 diabetes in 2025, out of an estimated 9.5 million in total. The illness is becoming more prevalent globally, particularly in children and teenagers.

Children feel seen and understood when they play with dolls that resemble them or have comparable life experiences. For children who use medical devices, owning a Barbie with Type 1 diabetes can be particularly meaningful, since it demonstrates that they are not alone and that their experiences are significant and normal. Additionally, it can inspire other children to learn about the condition in an approachable and transparent manner. All things considered, dolls like this can boost self-esteem, encourage empathy, and make playtime more inclusive and empowering for all.
