In a space where sustainability is often reduced to buzzwords, Pia Trivedi’s journey feels refreshingly grounded in process, patience, and purpose. In this conversation for Her Circle Bizruptors, the founder of Pia’s Faux traces the evolution of her brand.
When she first started out, Trivedi admits she chose the safer route. Unsure of how Indian consumers would respond to plant-based alternatives, she began with PU before gradually introducing innovative materials into her design language. What emerges from her narrative is not just a founder’s story, but a behind-the-scenes look at what it truly takes to build with new-age materials. Plant-based leathers, as she explains, are still in a nascent phase, requiring time, testing, and a deep understanding of how they behave and hold structure.
Today, that experimentation has expanded into a growing material library with tomato-based leather already in use, with banana and eucalyptus in the sampling stage. These materials, derived from agricultural waste like stems and leaves, are processed into sheets and dyed for use, turning what would otherwise be discarded into something functional and desirable. It’s a system that quietly rethinks both waste and luxury.
For Trivedi, the larger goal is clear: to reposition plant-based leather not as an alternative, but as an aspiration. There’s a conscious effort to shift perception and to make it ‘chic,’ ‘cool,’ and a genuine style statement.
