In a world where conversations around mental health are slowly becoming more open, Mrunal Salunkhe is exploring a path that brings together psychology, healing, and the quiet comfort of animals. In this conversation for Her Circle Bizruptors, the founder of TheraPaws reflects on how personal loss eventually shaped the foundation of her work today.
A psychologist, certified Animal-Assisted Intervention Specialist (CAAIS), dog behaviourist, and trainer, Salunkhe’s journey into animal-assisted therapy was deeply personal. After losing her own pet, she found herself drawn toward the presence of other dogs, an experience that helped her process grief and better understand the emotional impact animals can have on mental wellbeing. That period became the starting point for her exploration into how psychology and animal companionship could work together in therapeutic spaces.
With a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and years of experience across counselling, behavioural training, and social work, Salunkhe went on to train under some of India’s leading dog behaviourists while working with dogs across a range of behavioural challenges. She later pursued specialised certifications in Animal-Assisted Interventions, becoming one of only a few certified professionals in the field in India.
Today, through TheraPaws, she works alongside certified therapy dogs who help create supportive and transformative experiences for individuals navigating emotional, behavioural, and mental health challenges. Her work focuses on making therapy feel more approachable, comforting, and emotionally safe, particularly for those who may struggle with conventional therapeutic environments.
