A generation ago, many families celebrated simply because their daughters finished school. Today, young women are enrolling in engineering colleges, pursuing postgraduate science degrees and entering management programmes in unprecedented numbers. The question is no longer whether girls are studying, but what they are studying and whether their education is opening doors to meaningful careers.
The latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), released by the Union Ministry of Education on July 8, 2026, indicates that India's higher education landscape has undergone a transformation. Women are no longer catching up, but leading in many ways.
Women now account for 44 per cent of enrolment in STEM programmes, a remarkable shift in fields that have traditionally been male-dominated. The Gender Parity Index (GPI), which compares the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of women with that of men, stands at 1.08, remaining above 1.0 for the seventh consecutive year. The Female GER has also risen steadily, from 22.9 to 31.2 over the past decade, reflecting sustained improvements in access to higher education.

What Are They Studying?
Arts continues to be the largest undergraduate discipline, enrolling nearly 11 million students, with women accounting for 53.9 per cent of enrolment. This underscores the continued popularity of humanities and social sciences among young women.
Nearly 44 per cent of students enrolled in STEM programmes are women, indicating that young women are increasingly entering fields that drive innovation, technological advancement and economic growth. This shift has implications far beyond university campuses. STEM graduates feed industries such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, manufacturing, renewable energy, semiconductors, healthcare and scientific research, sectors that are expected to shape India's economic future.
Our country has long been recognised internationally for producing a relatively high share of women STEM graduates compared with many developed countries. The latest AISHE figures reinforce that position, suggesting that the pipeline of women entering technical education continues to strengthen.
At the postgraduate level too, women are making significant gains. Social Sciences recorded the highest enrolment with 1.06 million students, followed closely by Management (1.04 million) and Science (0.86 million). Women accounted for nearly three-fifths of postgraduate enrolment in Social Sciences and more than three-fifths in Science, signalling that they are not merely completing undergraduate degrees but continuing into advanced study and research. That matters because postgraduate education often serves as the gateway to leadership roles in academia, research, public policy and specialised professions.
A Growing Presence In Academia
The report also highlights another encouraging trend, the increasing number of women teaching in higher education institutions. Women now account for 778,000 faculty members, with the number of female teachers rising to 82 for every 100 male teachers.
Representation among faculty matters. Women professors, researchers and mentors can influence institutional culture, encourage young women to pursue research careers and help create environments where female students see leadership as attainable. As more women move from being students to educators and researchers, they become part of a virtuous cycle that can sustain future gains.

The Employment Gap
If women are increasingly dominating higher education, why isn't this reflected equally in India's workforce? While female educational attainment has improved dramatically over the past decade, women's participation in paid employment continues to lag behind their educational achievements. Although India's female labour force participation rate has shown improvement in recent years, particularly in rural areas, educated urban women remain underrepresented in the workforce compared to men with similar qualifications.
Several factors contribute to this disconnect. Marriage, caregiving responsibilities, concerns around workplace safety, limited childcare infrastructure, inflexible work arrangements and persistent social expectations continue to influence women's career trajectories. Many women leave the workforce during key life stages and struggle to return, resulting in what economists often describe as the ‘leaky pipeline.’
This makes the AISHE findings particularly significant. They represent not just higher enrolment but a rapidly expanding pool of highly educated women who could transform India's workforce, provided the right opportunities exist.
From Campuses To Boardrooms
Technology companies, research institutions, manufacturing firms and startups increasingly recognise that diverse teams drive innovation and better decision-making. A larger pool of qualified women graduates provides employers with an unprecedented opportunity to build more gender-balanced workplaces. But employers must meet these graduates halfway.
Creating inclusive workplaces, investing in mentorship, offering flexible work arrangements, addressing gender bias in recruitment and promotion, and supporting women through different stages of their careers will be critical if educational gains are to translate into economic growth. Otherwise, India risks investing in educating millions of talented women without fully benefiting from their skills.
