Don’t Take A Raincheck On Housekeeping

Monsoon is such a weather that it may seem all cozy and romantic when you are indoors, and messy and chaotic once you step out of the house. While you are getting ready to brace the rains, is your home ready to deal with the rigours of rain?

Here are some simple ways to prepare your home before the rainy days hit the calendar.

Fresh linen, refreshed home

Drying anything during the rains is a task but make sure to change your linens regularly – sofa covers, bedspreads, towels, and curtains. The weather, in general brings a foul, musty smell at home and we don’t want unclean linens contributing to it.

Spread the aroma

Keeping the house clean and fresh can keep the damp smelling factors at bay – closed windows, damp clothes and shoes. Light up incense sticks (in aroma of your preference), make use of potpourri bowls with a dash of scented oil, and scented candles to keep the house warm and welcoming.

Fold the carpets away

Carpets and monsoons don’t quite get along. They are high maintenance, owing to the mixture of moisture and dust that collect and emit a mouldy smell. It is best to put them away for the season and not be bothered with vacuuming or cleaning it on daily basis.

Wardrobe proofing

Monsoons invite pests, worms and insects home. If your home is a mini jungle, then it is time to spot and place plants that attarct mosquitoes and worms in the balcony or on the window sill. Place naphthalene balls or silica gel pouches in wardrobes, shoe racks and bookshelves to keep moisture and pests away.

Watch out for leaks and wiring

Get the entire house checked for leakages before monsoon sets in. You don’t want to be using your umbrella/raincoat inside the house, once it starts raining cats and dogs. Check the wiring of all rooms as well to avoid short circuits. Heavy downpour, lightening or thundering can cause electricity fluctuations, make sure your gadgets are protected and not on charge when the climatic conditions is worsening.

Touchwood

Your wood shouldn’t run out of luck during monsoons. Take care of your wooden furniture as during rainy season, wood tends to expand, absorb moisture, collect fungi and bring home a termite party. Make sure to wax your wooden furniture regularly to keep unwanted party away.
