Pooja Rooms or a space devoted to prayer is vital for any Indian household. I grew up in a house where my grandmother had a separate prayer room – an impeccably clean space that was filled with positivity, faith and divinity. As I have moved into my own home (a typical cosy, city apartment), I soon realised that a separate dedicated space for a pooja room is a luxury not many of us can afford to have.

When it comes to designing a pooja room, it’s not an easy task. One needs to consider direction, what way it’s facing, size of the space, location of the mandir, style and material and, of course, individual family customs. It can be a tedious and complex task to set up the space while also ensuring it doesn’t create clutter and compliments the rest of your home.

Once you have your basics covered, there are plenty of styles to experiment with.

1) Ensure the space is demarcated with doors or a partition of some kind

2) Platforms are a must. You can also opt for wall-mounted shelves to keep your idols or pictures.

3) According to Vaastu experts, when one prays, they should face the north-east, north or east. So make sure the idols/pictures are placed accordingly.

4) Install drawers/ storage space under the platform, this helps you keep your space uncluttered and neat.
