First Kiwi-Indian Female Police Officer Becomes Senior Sergeant

Women are making great strides the world over when it comes to breaking stereotypes and carving out a nice for themselves, no matter the odds. Among these women, Indian-origin women seem to be in the forefront, and the world is taking notice. Another woman that’s making India proud is Mandeep Kaur Sidhu. A Kiwi-Indian woman in the New Zealand Police Force, Kaur has now become the first Indian-origin female police officer to be promoted to senior sergeant. To mark her achievement, police commissioner, Andrew Coster presented Kaur with her badge at a ceremony in Wellington.

Born and brought up in Malwa, Punjab, Kaur is said to have migrated to Australia in 1999, at the age of 26, and relocated to New Zealand and worked as a cab driver to support herself. Then in 2004, Kaur joined the police force and has worked her way up.

In a post on social media about her latest accomplishment, Kaur stated that this is not just a feat of an individual, but a milestone for women of colour in New Zealand, adding that this accomplishment makes her feel represented and valued by the nation.
