Sustainable Fashion Myth Busting

Sonali Valecha|Jun 29, 2022
Sustainable Fashion Myth Busting

With sustainable fashion recently gaining momentum, there’s a lot that one might misunderstand about it. We’re here with some sustainable fashion myths you need to stop believing in right away!

Myth: All natural fabrics are eco-friendly

While natural fabrics are considered more eco-friendly as they’re plant-based and break down faster once led back into the environment, not all natural fabrics are as eco-friendly as we think. For example, conventional cotton is highly water-intensive and can end up damaging soil quality over time due to the use of pesticides. Its organic counterpart, however, has the opposite effect on the environment and is a lot better for the environment and its resources.

Myth: More expensive = well-paid workers

While people are slowly realising that sustainable fashion doesn’t have to always cost a bomb, a higher price tag is often associated with well-paid workers when it comes to any brand. But that may not necessarily be true. It makes sense to look beyond the price- at manufacturer details and factory details- to make sure the garment was made ethically. Transparency is not a luxury but a basic necessity in today’s world.

Myth: You have to stop using your fast-fashion pieces

Do you believe you need to get rid of all your fast-fashion pieces to be sustainable? Think again! Sustainability means using what you have and driving down consumption- leading to less waste and less production. This means making the most of whatever you have in your wardrobe, which may include fast-fashion pieces, is the key to sustainability.

Myth: Hauls are okay as long as they’re from sustainable brands

Hauls equal high consumption, which may sometimes include unnecessary consumption. Be it from sustainable brands or unsustainable ones, hauls must be avoided altogether unless you’re shopping just once a year, for example. Mindful shopping is the key to a better, more conscious wardrobe.
