Makeup 101: Everything You Need In A Beginner’s Makeup Kit

When it comes to putting together a basic makeup kit, even the most experienced beauty experts tend to falter. This is thanks to fact that we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to make-up (all of which tend to call out our name), which makes finding the ones that you will need and more importantly, will use, a challenge.

Skip prep: Cleanser, moisturiser, and SPF

Great make-up begins with a flawless base and for that, you need to prepare your skin for makeup. Cleanse well and moisturise, regardless of your skin type. Apply sunscreen and let it sit for about 15 minutes, and then continue with your routine. To minimise pores and make your make-up last longer, ice your face and then apply moisturiser and SPF.

For your base make-up: Foundation and concealer

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: you don’t need to break the bank to buy a decent foundation. Look for a buildable coverage option, and then and only then, see if you need to use concealer.

If you have dark circles or blemishes and want to cover them up, look for a full coverage concealer. Blend it using your finger for a non-cakey finish.

For your brows: Eyebrow pencil

For your eyes: Eyeshadow, eyeliner, and/or kajal and mascara

Once you’re done with your brows, load up on mascara. Feel free to try a blue or maybe a green option, and if that feels too daunting, just swipe on some black eyeliner. This will help tone down the intensity of the coloured mascara. Similarly, have fun with different hued liners. To play down the overall colour, apply multiple layers of dark mascara.

In case you didn’t know, using a black or brown kajal is the most fuss-free way to get a smoky eye. Draw a thick line, as close to your top lash line as possible, and blend it with your finger or a brush. Remember, no neatness is required, and any mistakes can be cleaned up with a Q-tip and a makeup remover.
