8 Easy Ways To Add Volume To Your Hair

Our mane is probably something we can have the most fun playing around with. Don’t like the length? Chop it. Crave a change? Colour it. Want to try something new? Just change your parting. But people with finer and thinner hair often feel like they can’t much to their tresses. Their main worry? It falls limp and flat. Luckily, several great tips and tricks can help you to nail a voluminous mane. Read on for our top tricks…

The high ponytail hack

This one isn’t ours per se but it is expert-approved. Chris Appleton, hairstylist to the stars recommends doing this to make your ponytail look fuller.

· Begin by gathering your hair at the back of your head.

· Divide it into two parts, the top, and the bottom section.

· Next, tie up the top section with a hair elastic.

· Divide the bottom half in two and cross it over the top. Tie it with another hair tie.

Apply products correctly

When it comes to fine hair that is falling flat, the key to reviving it lies in using the products and applying them correctly. Look for formulas that are labelled ‘volumising,’ ‘adds body’ or ‘thickening.’ If you’re open to it, try using a hair mousse and massaging it into your roots when your hair is semi-dry. Then comb it with a wide-toothed comb and you’re set.

Also, while conditioning your hair, focus on the mid-lengths and ends only. The same goes for when you’re applying a hair mask to your mane. It is always advisable to skip your scalp if the product has a heavier formula.

Choose the right haircut

You have to think strategically when getting a haircut, especially if you're trying to make your hair look more voluminous. Consider getting layers–not too many, just a few–as these can make your mane look fuller and take away any bulkiness.

Consider a shorter hair length

The longer your hair, the heavier it will be. Thanks to gravity, it will lay flat. Cutting even a couple of inches off with help with adding body. If you want to amp up the movement, consider a haircut that keeps your hair length above your collarbone. If shorter hair isn’t your thing, try a lob or a long bob or a shoulder-length haircut that is a little shorter at the back and longer in the front.

Switch your hair part

The five-second, no-commitment hack every hairstylist swears by: Switch your part. Over time, your hair tends to fall flat because it is used to the way you usually wear it. Whether you're parting down the centre or dividing it off to one side, try the opposite.

Condition before you shampoo

Fine hair tends to knot up super quickly and to fight this, you can try using a lighter conditioner before you shampoo your mane. Conditioners often leave a layer of residue on hair strands which ultimately weighs them down. Shampooing will remove that and leave you with clean hair that won’t fall flat.

Rinse with apple cider vinegar

Often, your hair tends to look limp at the roots because of the buildup of products, sweat, oil, and sebum. To eliminate this, you can try an apple cider vinegar rinse. After shampooing and conditioning your hair, mix a cup of ACV in a litre of water and apply it to your mane. The acidic vinegar will cut through the buildup and reduce it.

Fake thicker braids

Nothing is more disappointing than braiding your locks for what seems like forever, only to have them look thin. The simple hack? Loosen them using your fingers while braiding. This makes your braid look fuller and way more voluminous.
