Her Circle Originals With Dia Mirza Rekhi
Long before Dia Mirza Rekhi became one of India’s most prominent voices for environmental protection and sustainability, the values that would define her work were taking shape at home. Growing up in Hyderabad, she learnt to grow food, conserve resources, and understand the natural world around her. Today, as an actor, environmental advocate and mother, Dia carries those early lessons into the choices she makes, the causes she champions and the values she hopes to pass on to her son.
In conversation with Tanya Chaitanya for Her Circle Originals, Dia revisits the childhood experiences that shaped her outlook, the family values that continue to guide her, and the everyday decisions through which she puts sustainability into practice.
Her upbringing also shaped her understanding of equality, kindness and independence. She remembers a mother who gave generously, a grandmother who was deeply informed about the world, and a family where women were treated with dignity. These experiences now influence how she raises her son, Avyaan, with an emphasis on empathy, consent and emotional expression.
From choosing safe, organic clothing for Avyaan to conserving water, reducing wastage, carrying reusable bags, flying economy on shorter routes and selecting accommodation with sustainability practices, Dia shares the decisions that shape her life today.
