Dr Noronha: From Breast Cancer Diagnosis To Running A Marathon
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we celebrate Dr Vanita Noronha, an oncologist whose journey through cancer has added a deeply personal dimension to her work, her life, and the lives she continues to touch.
A professor of medical oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Dr Vanita has spent years caring for people diagnosed with cancer. When she discovered a lump in her own breast, she found herself on the other side of the diagnosis. The experience brought its own uncertainties, even for someone who understood the disease and its treatment.
She sought medical attention, underwent treatment, and gradually found her way back to the life she knew. With the support of her family and colleagues, she rebuilt her strength, eventually returning to exercise. Six months after completing chemotherapy and radiation, she ran a half-marathon.
Today, Dr Vanita speaks about her experience with the insight of an oncologist and the understanding of someone who has been through cancer herself. Her story carries an important message for women: pay attention to your body, make breast self-examination a regular practice, follow recommended screening guidelines, and consult a doctor about any unusual changes.
Her journey is a celebration of recovery, the people who make difficult times easier, and the possibility of looking ahead with renewed purpose.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s pledge to make time for regular breast self-examination. Look for any unusual lump, changes in breast shape or skin, or changes in the nipple. If you notice anything unusual, consult a healthcare professional immediately and follow the recommended screening guidelines, even when you feel healthy.
Because awareness matters, early detection matters.
